The Recorder - Speaking of Nature: The approach of spring

Speaking of Nature: The approach of spring The male wood duck might be the most beautiful bird in North America and this photo is certainly eye candy for anyone craving color. FOR THE RECORDER/BILL DANIELSON Published: 3/1/2021 8:23:23 AM I think that I may be suffering from a case of early-onset March Madness. Given all that has happened in the past 12 months, however, I think that this is perfectly reasonable. Since last March, I have been living in a steadily shrinking bubble of interactions with the human and natural worlds. Seeing very little of the people in my life has been a reasonable response to the situation we found ourselves in, while the arrival of a long, cold “old fashioned” winter has simply compounded matters. Weeks went by in January and February when I barely left the confines of my house for any reason whatsoever.

The Recorder - Speaking of Nature: The Red-Bellied Woodpecker

Speaking of Nature: The Red-Bellied Woodpecker This male red-bellied woodpecker is perched in just the way that allows us to see a hint of the red belly for which he is named. A female would look the same, but she would have a gray forehead and a patch of red on the back of her head. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO/BILL DANIELSON Published: 12/21/2020 8:57:58 AM Last week, I started a two-part segment on woodpeckers. I took a look at the northern flicker, which is a bird that is somewhat uncommon in our area during the winter months. This is because flickers like to eat ants and they like to look for them on the ground. Well, with the snow from last week’s storm still blanketing the landscape, I think it’s fairly easy to understand why flickers that stay in our area for the winter may have a difficult time surviving.

The Recorder - Speaking of Nature: A new bird for a new year

Speaking of Nature: A new bird for a new year Especially during the winter, there is no other bird that can be confused with a Carolina wren. The long curved beak is an outstanding tool for winkling peanuts out of the wire mesh of a peanut feeder their favorite feeder treat! FOR THE RECORDER/BILL DANIELSON Published: 1/11/2021 8:57:44 AM Modified: 1/11/2021 8:57:24 AM Almost everyone has a routine that they follow on a daily basis. Wake up, see to needed ablutions, get something to eat and then … well, you get the idea. Like almost everyone, I have found that my daily routine has been adjusted this winter. I no longer have to get up quite as early as I used to and I no longer have to drive to work. Now I make my commute to my office where I present my lessons online.

The Recorder - Mission accomplished

Mission accomplished This photo of a female red-bellied woodpecker is number 20,000 for 2020. For the Recorder/Bill Danielson Photo 20,069 shows two male northern cardinals in combat on the day of the big storm. This photo is in the running for photo of the year. Published: 12/28/2020 8:54:23 AM It is a few days after the great storm of 2020 and a few days before Christmas. I am getting my work done earlier than usual so my editor can clear the decks and have a relaxing bit of time off. For you it is the Monday after Christmas and we are just days away from seeing 2020 in the rearview mirror.
