MILLBURY After an 11th-hour decision by the low bidder, CTA Construction Co. Inc., to withdraw its bid, the R.E. Shaw School Building Committee on Monday, Feb. 22, unanimously awarded the contract to build a new Shaw Elementary School to the next lowest bidder, Springfield-based Fontaine Construction, for a total of $46.3 million.
Fontaine’s bid, which includes extras such as a PV system, comfort station and sport lighting, is roughly $3 million less than the $49 million allocated by the town to replace the existing 46-year-old Shaw School at 58 Elmwood St.
A total of nine companies submitted bids, ranging from the CTA’s total $45 million bid to the O&G Industries, which submitted the highest total at $51.7 million.

Swampscott Special Town Meeting approved two funding requests - $1.9 million to replace part of the Middle School roof and $165,000 to extend the feasibility study for a new elementary school.
“We’ve been chasing leaks for the last few years,” Swampscott Facilities Director Max Kasper said about the middle school roof, parts of which date back to 1992.
“We cannot continue to have water infiltrating into the building. We’ve had warping floors in the gym. We don’t want to see the water disintegrating structural components of the building,” he added.
