Smelt fishing by net closed for three years

Photo by: Jaime Rebhan No harvesting of smelt by net will be allowed in Wareham’s Weweantic River for the next three years, following a vote by the Board of Selectmen at a Feb. 23 meeting. The board’s vote followed the recommendations of Harbor Master Garry Buckminster and Brad Chase, a biologist from the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. Buckminster explained that the numbers of smelt are too low for the historic fishing site, and suggested a three-year fishing closure. “I think three years is reasonable,” Buckminster said. “It’s the same thing that we would do for a shellfish closure, and the state is going to be monitoring [the site].”

Ropeless fishing gear focus of new one-year study by state agency

The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries announced Thursday a one-year study to assess the challenges and opportunities ropeless fishing gear might present to the state s lobster fishery. The gear is not actually without rope, but with the help of different devices it is designed to eliminate the vertical buoy lines on fixed traps and potentially reduce the risk of right whale entanglement. The appeal for scientists and conservationists is that with ropeless gear, the water column remains open to allow the unobstructed passage of the endangered North Atlantic right whale. However, lobstermen who would need to change their gear if a ropeless system was adopted have expressed concern and doubt about the technology s reliability and cost.
