SPRINGFIELD The spectators were confined to their vehicles because of COVID-19. The contagious disease did nothing to restrain the enthusiasm for the occasion, however.

CRESTVIEW A pair of community organizations have partnered with Mayor JB Whitten and the city to assure the Crestview Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Observance will proceed.
To avoid conflicts with other cities’ observances, the Crestview event will be Saturday, Jan. 16.
The Carver-Hill Community Coalition and the Crestview Youth Coalition have taken on the task of organizing the city’s recognition of the late civil rights leader in a program that will include music and video of Dr. King.
“I’m grateful that these organizations have decided to come along with the city to accomplish this event,” said Crestview City Manager Tim Bolduc.

As part of a pilot program, a state strike team will administer 500 COVID-19 vaccine doses Saturday at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in northeast Palm Bay.
“It’s a great opportunity for the underserved community. People were very emotional on the phone, said Bennie Jackson, who chairs the church s board of trustees. People were crying. People were pleading. People were crying when we had told them that they were accepted, they were so happy, Jackson said. We were just overwhelmed with requests, Jackson said.

The effort is a partnership between Waterfront Properties, the Waterfront Way Foundation and New Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.
Waterfront Properties owner Robert Thomson and New Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church pastor Bishop Thomas A. Masters partnered to hold this event 19 years ago, and decided to bring it back due to the challenges many people in our area are facing because of the pandemic.
