CANAL FULTON A group of residents at Chapel Hill Community is turning plastic shopping bags into sleeping mats for the homeless.
In September, residents of the independent living community Kroft Commons began meeting to construct the mats.
They have completed three and have at least that many in the works and ready to give to someone who could use it.
While living in Wooster, Linda Ditzler saw the local library was teaching people how to make plastic bag sleeping mats. She thought she would give it a try.
Ditzler said she caught on pretty quickly without any experience crocheting.
JACKSON TWP. Police have released more details about Thursday s arrest of a man accused of impaired driving and abandoning his vehicle in a yard off Fulton Drive NW.
According to Stark County Jail records and a news release from the department, Derald D. Mitchell, 36, of Akron, threw a gun into a field and then proned himself out and allowed himself to be arrested.
Mitchell was arrested at 4:15 p.m. Thursday in the 5700 block of Fulton Drive NW
Police said they recovered the gun a short distance away.
They said he had been driving impaired and left his vehicle in a yard in the 5800 block of Fulton.
