Gov Evers state budget includes proposals targeting CALS programs – eCALS

February 19, 2021 | Last week, Governor Tony Evers released his proposed budget, which includes increased funding for UW System and a number of other higher education provisions. Several elements are directly related to the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (see list below). This is the first step in the biennial state budget process. The legislature’s budget-writing body, the Joint Finance Committee, will now make changes to the budget bill. The Legislative Fiscal Bureau (LFB) will take three weeks to develop an analysis of the governor’s budget proposal. Public hearings on the state budget and executive sessions are expected to begin in April.

Driftless Region Beef Conference equips producers with facts for environmental debate

January 15, 2021 Dr. Frank Mitloehner URBANA, Ill. – Beef producers face growing criticism from environmental groups over cattle s impact on the planet s health. Being able to separate fact from fiction over livestock emissions gives producers the science they need to engage in positive discussions on livestock and climate change.  Frank Mitloehner, professor and air quality specialist at UC-Davis is the keynote speaker at the virtual 2021 Driftless Region Beef Conference set for Jan. 26 to 28. The conference features two cattle research experts each evening, with sessions running from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Register online at go.illinois.edu/driftless21 at a reduced fee of $15. The conference is hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, University of Illinois Extension, and University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension.

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The upcoming virtual Driftless Region Beef Conference will host speaker Dr. Brenda Boetel. Dr. Boetel is the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Professor and Department Chair of Agricultural Economics and UW Madison Division of Extension Agricultural Marketing Specialist. Iowa State University Extension beef specialist Denise Schwab said Boetel will give viewers an insight on current market trends and the 2021 agricultural market outlook. “The market outlook provides producers with market insight to make best management practices, and as 2020 markets have shown, it can be challenging to anticipate what future markets may have in store,” Schwab said. “The market outlook allows producers to prepare by having a better understanding of what the markets may have to offer and when may be the best time to buy or sell, as well as by considering different risk management options for alternative price scenarios.”
