Several medical students from Florida Atlantic University are about to take their next important step to advance their career.
During this spring semester, Stephanie Byun, Isaiah Herrera, Alayna Kelly, and Faith Obimdike were awarded the T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society Scholarship from the Student National Medical Association.
The scholarships also support the mission of Florida Atlantic University s Schmidt College of Medicine to address inequities in within the healthcare industry.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. â Kansas City University student Paola Candia is on her way to becoming a doctor, but that s a title she still is wrapping her mind around. You know, it s kind of hard for me to say that just because, like, I honestly still don t feel deserving to be here, Candia said. And I like to think that, you know, it s all because of my mom.
Her mother emigrated from Nicaragua and inspired Candia to pursue a career in medicine when she was six years old.

Microaggressions are a common experience for medical students and are associated with a positive screening for depression, lower medical school satisfaction, and a higher risk of contemplating transfer or withdrawal from medical school. Female students, Black students, and students with other minoritized racial identities are more likely to experience microaggressions, which are defined as intentional or unintentional verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to the recipient based on their marginalized group membership.

The title of Maxine Hayes’ virtual talk last Tuesday as part of the Celebration of Inclusiveness in Medicine and Science Distinguished Lecture Series was “Righting the Wrong of Racial Injustice in Health.” It was a title she chose with care.
