Making money as a child in the 1950s in Houghton | News, Sports, Jobs

For the Gazette Growing up in the 50s, there were always a lot of ways for a kid to make money. Seasonal gigs like snow shoveling, mowing lawns, gardening, window washing and even thimbleberry picking provided more than just pocket change. My early clients included, Mrs. Frimodig, Ms. Irene Prisk, Mr. Carlos Haug and Ms. Linda Nikula. My other occasional jobs included delivering the “Grit” newspaper, for which E.B Pancratz had the franchise, and also delivering catalogs for the Fuller Brush Company’s Mr. Moll. I would later graduate to my regular paperboy routes for the Daily Mining Gazette and the Sunday Milwaukee Journal. I also did window washing for several downtown stores, which helped me grow a sizeable savings account at the Houghton National Bank- with the guidance of friendly banker, Dick Rowe, to keep myself equipped with the latest sports gear and other popular goodies.

UVic readies for in-class learning for close to 22,000: Our goal is to be as full as possible

“Our goal is to be as full as possible,” he said. “Students are really, really eager to get back to campus, and that’s what the provincial government has tasked us to work towards.” Only about 4,000 students including those in some engineering fields and fine arts, as well as graduate students involved in research labs were on the Gordon Head campus during the last year because of pandemic restrictions, while the rest learned virtually. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry advised March 8 that post-secondary institutions should begin planning for a September return to on-campus learning. While details of UVic’s efforts to bring back students are still being worked out, construction is underway near the Student Union Building on a $232.4-million housing and dining project designed for an additional 621 students who would otherwise be living away from the campus.

Louisiana Department of Health announces COVID-19 testing for week of May 3-8 | Department of Health

Test site details Once on site, those being tested will need to wear a mask and stay in their cars. For those ages 13 and older, the site will use a self-administered nasal swab test that will allow those being tested to swab their own nose on site while in their vehicles. Those being tested will drop the sealed sample into a container on their way out of the drive-thru site. Parents will administer tests to their children ages 12 and younger. While awaiting results, individuals who have been tested should follow CDC guidelines and take steps to help prevent the virus from spreading to people in their home and community.
