To many, especially white folks, they ve represented all the highfalutin ideals enshrined in the constitution: independence, self-reliance and the ability to live freely. For Black folks, guns often symbolize all those same things but, as we like to say on the show, it s complicated. As we talked about on our latest episode of the pod, firearms have always loomed large in Black people s lives going all the way back to the days of colonial slavery. Right from the jump, guns were tied up in America s thorny relationship with race; you can actually tell the story of how America s racial order takes shape, in part, by tracing the history of guns in the U.S. and who was allowed to own them.

As we talked about on our latest episode of the pod, firearms have always loomed large in Black people s lives going all the way back to the days of colonial slavery. To try to understand that ( very long) history of race and guns and make it digestible, we talked to Alain Stephens, a reporter with The Trace who has been reading about the history of Black gun ownership for a long while. Kelly Loeffler, who is seeking re-election in Georgia, released an ad called “Birds of Prey” attacking her Democratic opponent, Raphael Warnock. The title refers to a sermon Warnock gave during protests in the Gaza Strip in 2018, in which he accused the Israeli government of shooting “unarmed Palestinian sisters and brothers like birds of prey.” In a statement accompanying the ad, Loeffler called Warnock “the most anti-Israel candidate anywhere in the country.” The next month, she unveiled a new commercial, which again denounced Warnock as “anti-Israel.” When the two candidates debated in December, she accused him of having “called Israel an apartheid state.” 

Guns Kept People Alive During The Civil Rights Movement

to commemorate Freedom Summer, Tell Me More is diving into books that explore that theme. One of the cornerstones of the civil rights movement was non-violent resistance. During lunch counter sit-ins and protest marches Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders instructed participants not to take up arms. Instead, when violence erupted or force was used to disrupt their activities, people would non-violently resist attempts by law enforcement to end the protest. But this passive resistance did not necessarily mean an unwillingness to use force to protect themselves from violence in other circumstances. Tuskegee Study prompts mistrust of COVID vaccine by Black Americans

TUSKEGEE In 1972, then Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford made a promise to Charlie Pollard.  A “fairly well-to-do local farmer, Pollard had been approached by men from the United States Public Health Service in 1932 and offered a free physical examination at a nearby school. The medics told him he had “bad blood.”   Pollard had never heard of it, but doctors offered him and more than 600 Black men in Macon County, Alabama, free medical care for the ailment. They would never receive adequate treatment.  The “Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male,” was an observation “in nature” meant to follow the subjects’ until death to examine the fatal venereal disease’s undisturbed effects. When penicillin was discovered as an effective cure in 1945, the men were denied the life-saving treatment. When some sought care from county doctors, the physicians were advised by USPHS officials against treating them.
