Suspect in UNC Campus Y Vandalism Incident Arrested
UNC Police confirmed on Tuesday that the suspect in the Campus Y vandalism incident has been arrested.
On January 24, the suspect unlawfully entered the Campus Y building on campus and left anti-Semitic vandalism. The break-in and vandalism was reported to UNC Police, who issued two warrants for the person’s arrest.
Authorities issued an update on February 1, saying the suspect had been apprehended and was undergoing medical evaluation. With the suspect officially released from medical care, the person has since been arrested and charged with misdemeanor vandalism and felony breaking and entering.
UNC, Chapel Hill Leaders Discourage Gathering Ahead of UNC-Duke Game
Ahead of the UNC – Duke basketball game on Saturday, university and Chapel Hill officials are asking the campus community to abstain from Franklin Street celebrations if the Tar Heels see another win.
The time-honored tradition of UNC basketball fans rushing Franklin Street was discouraged this year due to health risks from the COVID-19 pandemic, but previous warnings from officials did not stop hundreds of students and fans from gathering following UNC’s win over Duke in February.
Following February’s win, UNC officials were on the lookout for spikes in campus COVID-19 cases. More than 2,600 students were tested for COVID-19 on the Monday following the game – about 500 more students than the university’s seven-day average – however, only five students tested positive.
One of Brazil s most notorious politicians was the subject of a criminal complaint filed on Monday by the country s Jewish.
“Hateful vandalism is not acceptable anywhere on our campus, but this breach of an established organization that promotes equality and justice is particularly egregious,” the school’s statement read.
Danny Siegel a Jewish senior at UNC told
ABC that the incident was his first personal encounter with antisemitism.
“As a Jewish person, that type of thing really hits home. I’ve never experienced anti-Semitism on this campus, I haven’t experienced that much in my life,” said Siegel. “It shows that the individuals who did that understood that and did it for a specific purpose, and that type of stuff doesn’t belong on this campus, let alone in this country, in this world.”
