12 new positive cases reported in Lewiston schools as COVID-19 continues to spread
As of Monday, 156 students and 51 staff members had contracted the virus since schools reopened Sept. 14, according to the Lewiston Public Schools website.

The latest cases affected more than 75 students and staff.
Lewiston Public Schools Superintendent Jake Langlais said:
• A van driver tested positive, resulting in 12 students from four schools going into quarantine.
• One infected student at McMahon Elementary led to nine students and two staff people being identified as close contacts. The return-to-school date for some other McMahon students and staff already in quarantine was extended because of this exposure.

Local schools are seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases, primarily among students. Lewiston has been the hardest-hit, with nine new positives over the past two days.
Six schools and one program are affected, some because of previous exposures, Lewiston Superintendent Jake Langlais said Monday.
He said Lewiston High School was declared an outbreak site a week ago and is still under observation. Two additional cases were reported there Monday.
Other buildings with positive cases are Connors, Montello, Geiger and Farwell elementary schools and the Lewiston Regional Technical Center. The Adult Education program reported one new case.
“The numbers are going up,” Langlais said. “We are seeing a trend of increased positives.”

LEWISTON An effort to increase the per-diem pay rate for substitutes to help fill those positions was derailed by the School Committee on Monday night.
Teacher vacancies in December ranged from 42% at Montello Elementary to 5% at Connors, with no vacancies at the Lewiston Regional Technical Center, according to information provided to the School Committee.
Educational technician vacancies ranged from 73% at Lewiston High School to 4% at Geiger Elementary.
Committee member Kiernan Majerus-Collins made a motion to increase the rate from $100 per day for teacher substitutes and $90 a day for education technician substitutes to $105 for each.
“We’re talking about people with no job stability, no guaranteed raises, no contract,” Majerus-Collins said. “I don’t think our district should say, ‘Sorry, but we want you to do this crucially important job for what is less than minimum wage in some places.’”

LEWISTON Students at Lewiston Middle School and Montello Elementary School have tested positive for COVID-19, according to Superintendent Jake Langlais.
He said test results for the two siblings came in Sunday.
“Due to various factors,” middle school instruction was to be fully remote Monday and Tuesday, he said. The Christmas break begins Wednesday and ends Jan. 4.
A small group of sixth-grade students at Montello (one class) was also to study remotely Monday and Tuesday.
