UMass Amherst Astronomer Reveals Never-Before-Seen Detail of Violent Energy at the Center of our Galaxy

Astronomers create largest map of the universe s dark matter

Astronomers create largest map of the universe’s dark matter Linda Geddes Science correspondent © agsandrew Deep Space series. Design composed of nebula, stars and colors We can’t see it, barely understand it, but know that it exists because of the powerful influence it exerts on space. Dark matter makes up about 27% of the universe, and its gravitational force is enough to mesh entire galaxies together in a structure known as the cosmic web. Now, scientists have created the largest ever map of this mysterious substance – and it could imply that there’s something wrong with Einstein’s theory of relativity.

Fernández-Ontiveros, of the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF) in Rome and Teo Muñoz-Darias, of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), have written an article in which they describe the different states of activity of a large sample of supermassive black holes in the centres of galaxies. They have classified them using the behaviour of their closest “relations,” the stellar mass black holes in X-ray binaries. The article has just been published in the journal
