Once the V8 is gone, then what?
The powertrain of the future has been decided. After more than a century, the internal combustion engine has begun its phased withdrawal. Battery-electric technology will take its place. Existing non-BEV passenger vehicles will either have to adapt or retire as well. For brands like Dodge, which relies heavily on powerful V8-powered muscle cars, the stakes couldn t be higher. But this technological shift also presents huge opportunities and Dodge is determined to embrace this path. Speaking to Muscle Cars and Trucks, head of Dodge Sales Operations, Matt McAlear, acknowledged changes abound. But not all change is bad.
Enthusiasts want more power, and tuners big and small will bring it to them.
It seems a new manufacturer (rightly) jumps on the electrified bandwagon every day. Jaguar has promised to electrify its fleet, Audi is taking its bread-and-butter A4 and A5 are adding volts and Volkswagen, well, you know what it did. But right now, it seems like we re at polar ends as enthusiasts.
There are cheaper hybrid and electric vehicles like the Toyota Prius and VW ID.4, and then insane electric supercars like the Porsche Taycan and McLaren P1. But in a decade or two, when the kids are driving used Nissan Leafs and Toyota Priuses and Chevy Bolts, what will they be able to do improve performance, beyond tires and suspension?

Unlike computer chips, there s never a shortage of Tesla news whether it s the rollout of Musk s latest full-self driving software that isn t really full self-driving, a fire in the Fremont plant or the blistering price of the latest Tesla Model S Plaid. Today we have 13 minutes of hands-free driving in Oakland, California where there are a lot of people, cars and scooters for the Tesla to find its way around.
If you keep your eyes on the navigation screen you can see some of what the Tesla s sensors are seeing including pedestrians, cars and trucks. The screen also features a notation for when FSD (full self-driving) is active, which means you can see when the driver takes over.
