Birds of Saudi Arabia

Birds of Saudi Arabia Title Picture Bani Mashoor Ancient Village is near An Namas in the western mountains and has a large tower and some ruined buildings. The weather was very poor with low cloud and rain when we visited so I took only a few photos of the location, as we did not stay long. Whilst birding the far northwest of Saudi Arabia, near Turaif, in January 2021 I found a Short-eared Owl in the basalt lava area near the Jordan boarder This is a scarce to uncommon winter visitor to all areas north of Jeddah, Riyadh and Hofuf. Two birds have been seen on occasion including two on Bisaita plain in the north of the Kingdom on 13 February 2009. In the Riyadh area it is a rare or scarce winter visitor. The Eastern Province has had records of multiple birds with a minimum of eight near Wari’ah, Diddibah 12-13 February 1987 and six Al Asfar Lake Jnauary to February 2018. This is only the second time I have seen the species in Saudi Arabia after seeing four at Al Asfar lake in Feb

How a Science Fight Finally Led to World s First Global Species List in 2020

How a Science Fight Finally Led to World s First Global Species List in 2020 STEPHEN GARNETT ET AL., THE CONVERSATION 9 JANUARY 2021 Taxonomy, or the naming of species, is the foundation of modern biology. It might sound like a fairly straightforward exercise, but in fact it s complicated and often controversial. Why? Because there s no one agreed list of all the world s species.   Competing lists exist for organisms such as mammals and birds, while other less well-known groups have none. And there are more than 30 definitions of what constitutes a species. This can make life difficult for biodiversity researchers and those working in areas such as conservation, biosecurity and regulation of the wildlife trade.

Federal agency says exotic bird shipment that stopped in Vancouver was not allowed in Canada

VANCOUVER The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed to CTV News that a shipment of more than 50 live exotic birds that passed through Vancouver International airport last month should not have been allowed into Canada. Animal welfare advocates said one bird was dead, and others had little to no food or water. In an emailed response Thursday, the CFIA said birds from many countries are not allowed entry into Canada because of the risk of introducing various diseases such as avian influenza. “Birds from Guyana are not eligible for entry into Canada or transit through Canada,” the email said. “An order to remove was issued for the shipment of birds.”
