WASHINGTON, D.C. â The Federal Energy Regulation Commission recently began considering a request to complete construction at the northern end of the Mountain Valley Pipeline, the natural gas pipeline with a planned southern endpoint in Chatham.
The FERC issued a stop-work order in 2018 that impeded construction within a 25-mile zone situated between two Jefferson National Forest watersheds, citing environmental protection.Â
However, the three-person FERC rendered a 2-1 majority vote last month to allow construction along a 17-mile portion of the previously denoted exclusion zone through Giles and Craig counties, from mile 201.6 to mile 218.6 of the pipeline, immediately northwest of Roanoke, ultimately concluding that construction along that segment would not release any pollutants into the neighboring watersheds.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler is calling on the Oregon Legislature to create a special committee aimed at changing how police tackle protest tactics that he believes are nothing more than criminal behavior. Smaller groups are organizing quickly, targeting parts of an area, going through them and causing destruction and stealing things, and leaving, Wheeler told the Portland Tribune. It is very difficult for law enforcement to respond with the existing tools they have. It is not just a Portland problem. It is a statewide issue that has happened in Eugene, Salem and Tigard, too.
Flooding closes new Multnomah County Central Courthouse

The new Multnomah County Central Courthouse will be closed until Wednesday, Jan. 13, at the earliest after a ruptured seventh-floor sprinkler caused extensive damage to the recently completed building.
Several floors were flooded on Saturday, Jan. 9, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney s office. The $324 million courthouse opened at the west end of the Hawthorne Bridge at 1200 S.W. 1st Ave. last October.
The Multnomah County District Attorney s Office issued a statement Monday, Jan. 11, saying the courthouse is expected to re-open for public business Jan. 13. All court hearings, including grand jury proceedings, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday have been canceled will be rescheduled.
