Global leaders have called for the immediate release of Myanmar s government members after a military coup resulted in the detention of at least 45 political leaders.
United States President Joe Biden has threatened to impose sanctions on the country, describing the coup as a direct assault on the country s transition to democracy and the rule of law .
United Nations Human Rights Chief Michelle Bachelet also warned the military against the use of unnecessary or excessive force .
Myanmar s military claim a free and fair general election will be held and that it carried out the coup due to claims of election fraud, allegations which drew serious international condemnation.

China expressed its hope that the international community would contribute to the political and social stability of Myanmar, which saw relatively calm streets inside the country but increasing tension from outside.
The statement came after a yearlong state of emergency was declared and senior government leaders were detained on Monday following electoral tensions.

United States President Joe Biden on Thursday ordered government health insurance markets to reopen for a special sign-up window, offering uninsured Americans a haven as the spread of COVID-19 remains dangerously high and vaccines aren’t yet widely available.
Mr. Biden signed an executive order directing the HealthCare.gov insurance markets to take new applications for subsidized benefits, something former President Donald Trump’s administration had refused to do. He also instructed his administration to consider reversing other Trump health care policies, including curbs on abortion counseling and the imposition of work requirements for low-income people getting Medicaid.
