The number of women holding senior leadership positions in mid-market businesses globally has hit 31 per cent despite the COVID-19 pandemic affecting economies around the world, according to Grant Thornton’s annual Women in Business report.
Francesca Lagerberg, global leader at Grant Thornton International Ltd, says: “Passing the 30 per cent of women in senior roles globally is an important milestone for businesses, but not the end goal. Those businesses that want to reap the benefits of a better gender balance must continue to take action to enable women to realise their ambitions.”
Another encouraging finding is the type of leadership roles women are occupying. Grant Thornton’s research reveals higher numbers of women across operational C-suite roles compared to last year, with the proportion of female CEOs up six percentage points to 26 per cent, female CFOs also up six percentage points to 36 per cent, and female COOs up four percentage points to 22 per cent. Grant Thornton LLP has named Beatrix Bernauer as its chief risk and compliance officer, a new role at the firm.
In the role, she will design and execute the firm’s enterprise-risk management program and practices, including frameworks and methodologies to support effective risk identification, assessment, mitigation and monitoring.
Bernauer, a principal in the firm, has served as Grant Thornton’s chief compliance officer for the past three years establishing standards, policies and procedures to ensure compliance with laws and regulations, as well as the firm’s own requirements. THE PHILIPPINES has again topped a global survey on the role of women in senior management, with more women taking on top roles in mid-market businesses among 29 economies.
The Grant Thornton Internationalâs 2021 Women in Business Report showed that Filipino women took on 48% of senior leadership roles, up five percentage points from the previous year, when 32 economies were surveyed.
Globally, 31% of positions in senior management teams were held by women, higher than the 2020 figure and surpassing the 30% representation threshold needed to change decision-making processes.
All the countries surveyed except for China, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, and Japan have passed the threshold.
