Stronger-than-expected winter has restaurant industry feeling optimistic

Brooks Kirchheimer, proprietor of Hearth and Hill, said his restaurant was surprisingly busy this ski season, particularly in February and March. After a COVID-shortened 2019-20 ski season and health-mandated shutdowns that saw many local restaurants struggle to get by and a few close for good, this past winter was a welcome surprise. A busier-than-expected season has many in the Park City restaurant industry optimistic that the worst of the pandemic’s economic hit is in the rearview mirror. Ginger Wicks, executive director of the Park City Area Restaurant Association since 2011, said while she does not have actual revenue numbers, she knows from conversations with members that 2020 was incredibly trying.

Tom Clyde: Big plans looming

For the most part, Park City is built. There aren’t enough vacant lots left to matter anymore. What you see is pretty much what you get, and despite my skepticism about growth in general, things have worked out pretty well around here. The only development left in town is the huge stuff that has been on the backburner for a generation. It’s stuff I never thought would happen because of the complexity of building it, and the costs involved. It never seemed to make sense. The Treasure Hill project was purchased by the city to put an end to that one.

Summit County s new transit district has started spending

Courtesy of the High Valley Transit District High Valley Transit, the nascent district set to take over Summit County’s transit operations in two months, recently started spending cash in a big way, inking deals with a consultant to run the operation and instructing staffers to secure the vehicles that will soon shuttle passengers around the Snyderville Basin. Officials agreed to spend nearly $900,000 for two buses and agreed to a master services agreement and other deals with River North Transit LLC, the subsidiary of Via Transportation that will run services here. Kim Carson, High Valley Transit’s board president, said the contracts and vehicle purchases are exciting first steps for the district.
