Hello readers of The Wild.
U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff likes to be out in nature. You might see him on a night hike in Griffith Park or running up the steep trail from the Stough Canyon Nature Center in Burbank to the top of the ridgeline. And, of course, people recognize him. “I do have those who want to talk about peace in the Middle East, but for the most part people are friendly,” he said on a Monday phone call.

Schiff also looks out for his wild constituents, the ones that don’t vote. He’s proud that mountain lions and bears dwell in his 28th District, which includes Griffith Park and the Hollywood Hills, La Canada-Flintridge and Tujunga to the north, and Echo Park and the Elysian Valley to the east. “I’m delighted when I meet with people from Africa and they tell me about their lions, and I can say ‘I’ve got lions,’ ” he said.

California’s deserts can be magical during wildflower season. This probably isn’t one of those years, and it has nothing to do with our pandemic cancel culture. The traffic-stopping orange poppies from Lake Elsinore to the Antelope Valley likely will be no-shows because the fall-winter season has been drier than usual.
“Nothing is blooming at all,” Death Valley National Park spokeswoman Abby Wines said in an email. “Usually, bloom on the valley floor is mid-February through early April. Given that nothing is blooming yet, and that we didn’t have much precipitation in the fall and early winter, it will not be a spectacular bloom.”
California State Parks is seeking to hire ten Visitor Services Park Aides for the 2021 spring Antelope Valley poppy season. The reporting location is the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, which is 16 miles east of State Route 14, at 15101 Lancaster Road, Lancaster 93536.
These positions will work under the direction of the Supervising State Park Ranger with a pay range between $12.42 – $14.51 an hour. The visitor services park aide duties will include operating the entrance station at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, collection of park fees, and completing end-of-day cash register accounting and associated collections paperwork.
These positions are a primary point of contact for park visitors and will provide information on the park(s); explain and advise park rules; and give directions to park facilities, surrounding area features, and establishments.

So many of our hopes surrounding the tides and time of nature are very much of the wait and see variety.
Patience is required. So. Much. Patience.
We need to wait and see if the wind will stop, if hoped-for snow will fall, if our tomatoes will ripen, if the weekend weather will be warm, and what s happening on the sometimes mercurial, always majestic wildflower scene.
