Funding for rooftop solar on public buildings received a significant boost as part of the government’s £1 billion Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy, released today.
Within the strategy, £932 million has been allocated for the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which will see 429 projects around England receive funding. This will be used for a number of measures, including the installation of rooftop solar, storage and heat pumps.
“While reaching our climate targets will require extensive change across our economy, we must do so in a way that protects jobs, creates new industries and attracts inward investment - without pushing emissions and business abroad,” said energy secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.
More than £900m has been awarded to a range of schemes meant to improve the energy efficiency and decarbonise public sector buildings.
In total, 429 projects have been given £932m of funding for measures such as low-carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps, insulation and LED lighting. The Manchester Combined Authority was the single largest recipient with a £78m grant to carry out a range of green upgrades. A further £68m of funding is still to be allocated to projects.
The government also unveiled a new Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy today. It claims it is the first plan by a major economy setting out how it will achieve net-zero carbon emissions in industry. The UK has a national net-zero target date of 2050.

The government has set out a blueprint to switch 20TWh of the UK industry’s energy supply from fossil fuel sources to low carbon alternatives, as part of its £1 billion Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy.
To kick start this transition, the energy secretary today announced that £171 million from the Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge has been allocated to nine green tech projects around Britain.
Additionally, £932 million has been directed to 429 projects across England as part of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which will fund low carbon heating systems such as heat pumps as well as technologies such as rooftop solar.
The final key part of the government’s strategy revolves around new measuring rules for energy and carbon performance for commercial and industrial buildings in England and Wales. These could save businesses around £2 billion annually on energy costs by 2030, as well as reducing carbon emissions by 10%, or 2 million
