Greater Manchester Police Federation raise concerns after report of return to target-driven culture

Three police officers THE Greater Manchester Police Federation has raised concerns of returning to a damaging, target-driven culture in policing after a report about the possible reintroduction of league tables emerged. Police chiefs have been told they will be measured in their success in cutting six crime types including homicide, serious violence and cyber crime, according to The Times. The Home Office will compare their performance against national benchmarks in what it said was a “relentless focus on cutting crime”. Greater Manchester Police Federation chairman, Stu Berry, said: We are a service not a business and it s concerning that politicians who do not learn from historic mistakes, are doomed to repeat them.

Greater Manchester Police Federation slams Independent Office for Police Conduct

THE Greater Manchester Police Federation has slammed the public body in charge of investigating claims against officers after some cases have been left unresolved for years. The federation says it has witnessed thousands of police officers subjected to incredibly damaging probes by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Chairman Stu Berry said that while police officers have no objection at being held accountable for their actions, the IOPC and its investigators spend far too long scrutinising their work in what at times can feel like a “rampant and unchecked misuse of power”. Mr Berry said that the IOPC’s investigations had led to “a shocking situation for policing”, giving examples of two Greater Manchester Police officers who were going through extremely long investigations.
