When the first wave of COVID-19 hit Brooklyn Hospital Center, April Kehoe often found herself rushing between six different patients in a makeshift Intensive Care Unit far more than the one- or two- patient caseload typically considered safe for nurses in this setting.
The second surge has brought fewer hospitalizations, but Kehoe says the staffing shortages remain. She is still routinely assigned three or four intensive care patients at a time, a situation she says increases the risk of making medication errors or missing changes in a patient’s status.

WASHINGTON The federal government miscalculated funding for hospital-based nursing schools for nearly two decades, and now the Biden administration is forcing them to pay up during the worst health care workforce crisis in decades.
Nursing schools across the country say it could force cutbacks and even closures. OSF HealthCare, based in Illinois, is already weighing which of its two nursing schools will close.
“CMS is well-intentioned in trying to fix something, but the way they are doing it is tone-deaf, by taking money from nursing schools during the pandemic,” said Chris Manson, vice president of government relations for the system. OSF estimates the government could demand $11.5 million from them for old miscalculations.
Northwell says it will be ready for them.
In 2020, it launched a new venture called Northwell Direct to partner with big employers on everything from coronavirus testing to launching on-site health centers.
It s even giving employers an option to bypass health insurers and work with Northwell directly to provide employees with a network of doctors charged with keeping them healthy. Employers would pay a monthly fee per employee for access to the narrow network and Northwell s care management capabilities.
Already, Northwell Direct is attracting big customers. It said in January that it is partnering with Amazon-owned Whole Foods Market to provide the grocery store chain s New York employees and their families primary care at seven Northwell practices at no cost.

Despite my best (continuing) efforts, I had COVID-19 at some point last year. No idea when, where or how. I am ~extremely~ fortunate to not even have noticed the dreadful bastard.
