The View from Six Years Atop the Masthead of JGR: Oceans

Oceans, I had little idea of what I was taking on. Six years later I can report that it has been an enormously challenging and rewarding undertaking. I have been privileged to work with a remarkable team of Editors who, although we rarely meet in person, have become greatly cherished and trusted colleagues. I will really miss our interactions. The daily work of the journal involves close coordination with AGU staff, and I cannot speak highly enough of them. The professional expertise shown and personal care taken has been a constant source of pleasure; the rare face-to-face meetings only enhanced this experience.

A model organism can be anything from single-celled bacteria to viruses and fungi. They can be more complex organisms, such as monkeys, mice, rats, frogs, elephants and a salamander called axolotl.

Swarm of Pacific eels is largest group of fish seen in the abyss

Life 26 January 2021 Deep-sea explorers have found the largest collection of fish ever seen in the abyssal zone of the ocean, which stretches from 3000 to 6000 metres deep. Footage of more than 100 cutthroat eels on top of an underwater mountain in the Pacific suggests that these areas may be less empty than previously believed. “This was totally unprecedented for the deep ocean,” says Astrid Leitner from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California.
