The Grand Erie District School Board is getting ready for virtual learning in the new year.
From January 4th to 8th, all students within the board will move to remote learning with educators providing synchronous and asynchronous learning to students throughout the day.
For students and families moving to remote learning for the first time this school year, information regarding the safe pick-up of devices and/or learning materials will come from their school Principal in the new year.
Beginning January 11, Grand Erie elementary students will return to in-class instruction.
Beginning January 25, Grand Erie secondary students will return to in-class instruction.
The province teased extending the winter break weeks ago, but then backed off. Then, it hinted at an extended winter break late last week.
The news also follows the announcement of a province-wide shutdown and comes as COVID-19 cases and outbreaks continue to appear in Hamilton schools.

Dawn Danko, chair of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, wishes the announcement came a week or two ago. This is not a surprise, the number are not a surprise . I do welcome the focus on student safety, staff safety and community safety, but this decision needed to be made earlier. We really need to have some leadership on this, she said on Monday afternoon.

Another nine new COVID-19 cases were being reported by the Brant County Health Unit on Friday, bringing the total active cases to 106.
Two of those people are being treated in hospital.

There have been 709 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Brantford and the County of Brant since the outset of the pandemic in March. Of those cases, 598 have been resolved.
Five local people have died from the virus.

A tentative agreement has been reached between the Grand Erie District School Board and its elementary teaches.
Board chair Greg Anderson said he is pleased two parties have arrived at a deal.

“Our elementary teachers do such wonderful work on behalf of our students,” Anderson said. “We’re so grateful to them for the impact they make daily in our schools and in the lives of our students and families.”
The teaches are represented by the Grand Erie Elementary Teachers Federation, a local of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario.
