Ethiopia said Wednesday it would not be deterred from impounding water at its Nile mega-dam, sparking new warnings from downstream countries Sudan and Egypt, which are worried about their water supply. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has been a source of tension in the Nile River basin ever since Ethiopia broke ground on it in 2011. Downstream neighbours Egypt and Sudan view the dam as a threat because of their dependence on Nile waters, while Ethiopia considers it essential for its electrification and development.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz chaired the cabinet meeting that was held virtually from Neom amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The cabinet underscored King Salman’s telephone call with Jordan’s King Abdullah II during which he extended his full support for all the measures he and his crown prince take to preserve Jordan’s security and stability. The ministers reviewed the consultations and talks held in recent days between Saudi Arabia and several friendly nations over the latest regional and international developments and the Kingdom’s declaration of the Green Middle East Initiative.
