SALT LAKE CITY A new report issued Thursday by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance says passing America s Red Rock Wilderness Act, which would protect millions more acres of land in Utah, could help mitigate the impacts of climate change and stem the loss of animal species and biodiversity.
Passing the act would be a big step toward meeting the goals of the 30x30 Campaign to Save Nature, the report says, which aims to protect 30% of the earth s lands and oceans by 2030 in an effort to limit the planet s temperature increase.
In a Thursday presentation from the Wilderness Alliance, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club, SUWA board member Regina Lopez-Whiteskunk said America s Red Rock Wilderness Act presents an extraordinary opportunity.

On his first day in office, President Joe Biden signed an executive order to review the boundaries of several national monuments, including Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears national monuments in Utah. This order is the beginning of an effort to undo the illegal, unprecedented and unpopular rollbacks of public land and water protections by the Trump administration in the last few years.

FACT SHEET: Interior Department Welcomes Day One Executive Orders to Restore Public Lands and Waters, Combat Coronavirus
Immediately following his inauguration, President Joe Biden signed Executive Orders that take critical first steps to address the climate crisis, create good union jobs, and advance environmental justice, while reversing the previous administration’s harmful policies.
One of President Biden’s Executive Orders requires the Interior Department to conduct a review of the monument boundaries and conditions of the Grand Staircase-Escalante, Bears Ears, Northeast Canyons, and Seamounts Marine National Monuments. The order directs Interior, in consultation with other agencies and Tribal governments, to determine whether restoration of the monument boundaries and conditions would be appropriate.
