In cooperation with the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD), NPS posted a webpage seeking individuals skilled in bison removal.
Applications open to the public at 12 a.m. local time on May 3 through 11:59 p.m. on May 4, according to the site.
In an accompanying announcement detailing the work and qualifications of the September 2021 job, the NPS wrote that it was concerned about increased impacts on park resources such as water, vegetation, soils, archaeological sites and values such as visitor experience and wilderness character given the current distribution, abundance, density and the expected growth of the bison herd on the North Rim.

THE National Park Service is looking for volunteers to help kill hundreds bison in the Grand Canyon s National Park.
The NPS, along with the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD), are looking for people “skilled” in “bison removal,” according to a webpage post.

PHOENIX – The first controlled bison hunt inside Grand Canyon National Park is scheduled to take place this fall, and the park is looking for applicants to help with its effort to reduce the area s bison population by 200.
The Arizona Game and Fish Commission and the National Park Service announced the dates and application process Tuesday, opening up the opportunity to skilled volunteers with proficient marksmanship. But the initiative has some experts worried that hunting could soon become more commonplace inside national parks.
The 300 to 500 free-ranging bison at the Grand Canyon s North Rim are descendants of 86 buffalo brought to the area 115 years ago by rancher Charles “Buffalo” Jones, according to the National Park Service. And the non-native animals have long been a nuisance in the area.
