Whitehall 4th-grade science teacher wins statewide award

Ealy Elementary School teacher Gabriel Knowles received the Michigan Elementary Science Teacher of the Year award last month, Whitehall District Schools announced on its Facebook page. Knowles, who teaches fourth-grade science, said that in his teaching career, he’s noticed that the early ages are the time to get young students interested in science. He noted that with so much focus on reading and math at those ages, it can be hard to get students to also invest their emotional capital in science, but when they do, Knowles thinks they benefit. “Hopefully that gets them interested in learning in general,” Knowles said. “Hopefully as they become more interested in learning in general, they might gravitate to STEM fields, which is something we could use in our country. NMU completed the fall semester with 85% of classes having face-to-face learning, officials said. NMU President Fritz Erickson said it was never a “one-size-fits-all” model with how classes would be conducted, but rather the university wanted to maintain the commitment to students that classes that could be face-to-face would be. “Our goal was always to be able to stay face-to-face, but we were always prepared to go, really on a dime, fully remote if we needed to,” Erickson said. “We thought it was really important to lay out a comprehensive plan for staying face-to-face but have an equally robust plan for going remote if we needed to do that.”
