Altru gives overview on hospital project to Grand Forks County commissioners
Altru formally requested ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act of 2021) funds last month to help pay for the hospital’s construction. ARPA, the $1.9 trillion economic stimulus program signed into law by President Joe Biden in March, provides additional funds to state and local governments. It can be used to support public health expenses, infrastructure such as water, sewer and broadband facilities, replace lost public sector revenue and even replace pay for essential workers. Altru is seeking COVID-19 relief dollars to help fund construction of its new hospital.
The Impact Award is bestowed each year at the Grand Forks EDC’s annual meeting. It recognizes businesses and individuals who make a positive impact on economic growth and prosperity in the Grand Forks region. Laffen founded JLG Architects in 1989 with Gary Johnson. Jim Galloway, another partner, later joined the firm.

More and more businesses and government operations are dropping mask requirements in light of the recent CDC guidance on face coverings. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says fully vaccinated individuals no longer have to wear masks indoors – with some exceptions.
Grand Forks city hall no longer has a mask requirement…UND will drop the campus mandate June 1
st…the Grand Forks County Commission is scheduled to talk about the issue next week.
At a recent board meeting Health Director Debbie Swanson was asked about the CDC announcement. Swanson says the guidance was likely designed to build confidence in vaccines and encourage people to take the shot. “It wasn’t necessarily to give schools and other entities the platform to say OK this is what we will do in our agency.”
