May 18, 2018 – Santa Fe High School – Santa Fe, Texas. Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, allegedly opens fire killing 10 and injuring 13. Pagourtzis is arrested and charged with capital murder and aggravated assault of a public servant. In November 2019, he is declared mentally incompetent to stand trial. January 23, 2018 – Marshall County High School – Benton, Kentucky. Gabriel R. Parker, 15, allegedly opens fire killing two and injuring 18 others. The suspect is arrested at the scene and later charged with two counts of murder and 14 counts of first degree assault. December 7, 2017 – Aztec High School – Aztec, New Mexico. William Atchison shoots and kills students Casey Jordan Marquez and Francisco Fernandez. Atchison, a former student at the high school, dies of what police believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Richard Gene White 1928 - 2021

Richard Gene White, age 92, formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away Saturday, February 27, 2021 at The Glenn in Hopkins, MN. Dick was born in 1928 to Ed and Ethel White in Rushsylvania, OH.  He moved to Grand Rapids, MN as a child, with the family settling in Wendigo.  He graduated from Grand Rapids High School and served in the U.S. Army before graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Forestry Management.  On June 18, 1954, he married the love of his life, Liz, enjoying 66 years together. Dick and Liz raised their 3 children and multiple dogs at their home on Pokegama Lake.  He was the owner of North Country Equipment, serving the logging and construction industry throughout Northern MN.  After he retired, he and Liz wintered on Sanibel Island and Montana for many years.  

Patrick D Moren 1940-2021

Patrick Donald Moren, Esq., the oldest child of three sons, was born in Bovey, Minnesota on June 13, 1940 to Mary (nee Bedi) Moren, and Donald Moren. Pat grew up in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and from the age of 4, spent his summers at the rustic, hand built family cabin on beautiful Lake Pokegama. He was an avid water-skier and become so adept at the sport that he could ski on one bare foot. Following his graduation from Grand Rapids High School in 1958, he attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. He was mentored there by University President Father Arno Gustin, who later was the Sacred Heart Parish priest in Roseau and a very close family friend. Father Arno had such a positive impact on Pat’s life that Pat even talked about Father Arno as he was receiving his last rites.

Those ages 15-19 had seven new cases, the lowest number in a week since the beginning of the school year. Statewide, COVID-19 cases over the past week were 158 for ages 4 and under; 248 for ages 5-9; 365 for ages 10-14; and 598 for ages 15-19. COVID-19 cases in schools No Northland school buildings were added to or removed from the Minnesota Department of Health s outbreak list Thursday. A school building is put on the list if it reports five or more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in students or staff who were in a building while infectious during a two-week reporting period. The building is removed after 28 days of no new positive tests.
