Michigan teachers, students frustrated by hybrid school

Roomies are the students who attend school in-person twice a week. Zoomies beam into class virtually.  Ann Arbor is about a month into a hybrid school format for younger grades, where students, by their parent or caregiver s choice, attend school in-person a few days a week.  At least 400,000 students across Michigan are learning in districts offering hybrid school options, according to Michigan State University data from March. Depending on the district, the model puts some students back in school in-person, at least for a few days of the week, while allowing others to remain remote by choice amid a statewide spike in COVID-19 cases.

Six Grand Rapids Public School Students (GRPS) joined Governor Gretchen Whitmer Thursday afternoon at the DeVos Place, and received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.  The students are 16 to 18-years-old, and are serving as Protect Michigan Commission COVID-19 ambassadors. They urged their peers to also get vaccinated and stop the spread of COVID-19.

In honor of February’s Black History Month, the T-shirt reads, “This isn’t just a month, it’s every day for us. #blackhistory,” and features a bird released from a cage. The design and concepts were inspired by the lives of Black people making history.
