John Balemans Running For Council In Grand Bay-Westfield

(Photo: Submitted) A familiar face has joined the list of hopeful councillors for Grand Bay-Westfield. John Balemans is running as a councillor candidate for another term. He said he’s in favour of healthy growth and development along with recreational improvements and community events. Balemans said in his time as town councillor he supported these goals as well as when he was on the River Valley Community Centre Board of Directors. He said he’ll be primarily running his campaign through social media to adhere to COVID-19 requirements.

RCMP searching for two suspects in N B home break-in

  HALIFAX RCMP in New Brunswick are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying two suspects connected to a break, enter, and theft that happened at a residence in Nerepis, N.B., in February. According to the Grand Bay-Westfield RCMP, the incident happened on Feb. 26 on Nerepis Road around 4:30 p.m. Police say the individuals returned to the residence the following day at approximately 9 p.m. On Tuesday, RCMP released surveillance video photos of the individuals and are hoping information from the public may help identify the suspects or provide additional information to help the investigation. Police describe the first suspect as a man with a thin build and a tattoo over his left cheekbone. At the time of the incident, he had a stubble beard, and was wearing a facemask, a baseball cap, a hooded sweater, sweatpants, and brown shoes.

Rothesay Council Passes Plastic Bag Ban

Image: Staff photo A ban on plastic bags at the checkout will begin on June 30th in the town of Rothesay. The town has joined the communities of Quispamsis, Grand Bay-Westfield and Saint John who already passed similar bans. Rothesay Town council passed the plastic bag reduction by-law at Monday’s meeting. Mayor Nancy Grant said with move they have given “a big nod to the environment”. The Fundy Regional Service Commission asked all Saint John area municipalities to put a ban in place by July 1. The Commission estimates that 35 million plastic bags are used every year in the region.

Nominations Close For Municipal Elections

(Image: Elections New Brunswick) Voters in New Brunswick now know who they will be voting for in the upcoming municipal elections. Nominations for the municipal, district education council and regional health authority elections closed at 2 p.m. Friday. According to Elections New Brunswick’s website as of 2 p.m., four people are in the running for mayor in Saint John: Darrell Bastarache, Donna Reardon, Mel Vincent Jr. and Howard Yeomans. A total of 47 people are running for the 10 council seats in the city. In Quispamsis, incumbent Gary Clark and deputy mayor Libby O’Hara have put their name forward for mayor. There are also 10 candidates for the town’s seven council seats.
