Volunteers are invited to come out to Grand Mere State Park next week to help remove invasive plants. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says they will hand pull spotted knapweed from the open areas allowing native flora to grow and thrive. The invasive plant is a threat to those native plants. Volunteers are told to wear long sleeves and long pants. They will be working in the sun so they’re also asked to bring a hat and plenty of water. Since it is Grand Mere State Park, wearing insect repellant is highly advised. Those who want to sign up can do so by email and we have the address at WSJM.com. The volunteers will be out from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, July 10 and meet at the small parking area at Willow and Rosemary Drive.

The Lincoln Township Police Department is investigating an assault reported at Grand Mere State Park on Thursday morning. It says a 28-year-old woman reports she was attacked on the nature paths shortly after 8:30 a.m. She told officers she had been sitting with her dog about a quarter mile from the parking lot when a man came up from behind and grabbed her, pushing her back onto the ground. The suspect then began kicking and punching her in the torso and face. The woman fought back and her dog bit the suspect. The attack lasted about two or three minutes and then the victim was able to run. The suspect is described as a husky white male, about five foot ten or five foot eleven with dark hair. A search of the park done by police following the assault report did not turn up the suspect. The victim was taken to Spectrum Health Lakeland to be treated for abrasions and bruises. Anyone with information on the assault is asked to contact police.
