SC DHEC data: Most COVID cases are among those not fully vaccinated

View Comments The Department of Health and Environmental Control reviewed new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths in a two week period at the beginning of June and found that most of these cases were among those who were not fully vaccinated. Provisional findings show that from June 1 to June 14, in cases that DHEC was able to verify an individual s vaccination status, 94% of new cases 1,540 out of 1,635 and 90% of new hospitalizations  83 out of 92  were not fully vaccinated. All 11 deaths during this time period were people who were not fully vaccinated. That s a vaccine preventable disease, Dr. Jane Kelly, assistant state epidemiologist, said during DHEC s weekly COVID-19 call on Wednesday.  We have vaccines available and we could have helped to save their lives if they had been fully vaccinated.

McMaster bucks federal initiative and asks DHEC to not go door to door

View Comments Gov. Henry McMaster has asked the state Department of Health and Environmental Control to not go door-to-door to increase vaccination rates despite a federal initiative to do so. McMaster said in a letter to DHEC that taking the vaccine is a personal choice for South Carolinians and that information about the vaccine and access to the vaccine has been provided to the public. He added that the initiative from President Joe Biden s administration for door-to-door outreach was bad policy. The prospect of government vaccination teams showing up unannounced or unrequested at the door of targeted  homeowners or on their property will further deteriorate the public’s trust and could lead to potentially disastrous public safety consequences, McMaster said in his letter.

SC businesswoman s new organization to advocate for small business

View Comments Diane Hardy quickly learned that government has great influence over the small business environment when she opened Nothing Bundt Cakes a few years ago. She was then surprised at how little representation small business owners had during the height of the pandemic when they had to follow local and state mandates. Hardy now hopes the Mom and Pop Alliance will become the voice of South Carolina small business owners in the Statehouse. We want to advocate for our small businesses down in Columbia to be their voice, said Hardy, director and founder of the organization.  And to give them a stronger voice than they have now.

Henry McMaster appeals preliminary injunction of Fetal Heartbeat Bill

This story has been updated to include a statement from Attorney General Alan Wilson. Gov. Henry McMaster along with state Attorney General Alan Wilson, 13th Circuit Solicitor William Walter Wilkins III and Speaker Jay Lucas, filed an appeal of the preliminary injunction placed on the Fetal Heartbeat Bill on Wednesday. While the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to hear the case related to Mississippi’s law offers great hope and promise for protecting the lives of the unborn, we must defend South Carolina’s Fetal Heartbeat Act against every challenge at every level, McMaster said in an emailed press release.
