Penguins beat Flyers, take East Division lead

Sidney Crosby had two goals and an assist Tuesday as the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins moved into first place alone in the East and got some redemption with a 7-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Flyers, who are out of the playoffs, had routed Pittsburgh 7-2 on Monday.
Jake Guentzel had a goal and two assists for Pittsburgh (35-16-3, 73 points), which has clinched a playoff spot and moved two points ahead of the Washington Capitals atop the East Division standings. The Capitals, however, have two more games remaining than do the Penguins.

Marcus Pettersson, Jake Guentzel, Jason Zucker, Mark Friedman and John Marino also scored goals while Tristan Jarry had 30 saves for the Penguins, who moved two points ahead of idle Washington and bounced back from a 7-2 loss to the Flyers on Monday night.

It has been approximately eight million years since the Washington Capitals faced the Pittsburgh Penguins okay, so it was February 25, but time is an illusion so who can really say? The Caps and Pens are currently vying for first place in the MassMutual East Division, and both teams have playoff spot clinching scenarios in play tonight that also depend on the outcome of the Rangers-Islanders game three hours away. If the Capitals take more points in their game than the Rangers do in theirs, the Caps will clinch a playoff spot. If the Penguins and Islanders both win in regulation, the Penguins will clinch a playoff spot. Let’s go, boys and girls and babes.

Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan is having himself a fine season. The team has been attacked once again this season by the injury bug and the head coach has found a way to lead his team to a 30-14-3 record, heading into Saturday night’s action. Considering the number of questions that surrounded this Penguins roster, the general manager leaving abruptly and the constant names on the injury report, Sullivan has been the pillar his team’s needed for some stability.
There’s no doubt about it, coach Sullivan deserves to receive some Jack Adams votes for coach of the year, and I may even go one step further and say he should be finishing in the top-2 of voting this season.
