Share This: Feb. 3, 2021 – Small businesses in Wisconsin now have a place to go for free legal advice on issues they face due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the tough economy. Starting Feb. 5, 2021, volunteer attorneys will meet with clients each Friday for an hourlong appointment, as part of the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Business Law Section’s new Small Business Assistance project. The project, implemented in collaboration with the Marquette Volunteer Legal Clinics (MVLC), pairs volunteer attorneys and law students with small-business owners who have legal questions relating to their businesses. “Small Business Assistance will support a wide variety of small businesses,” including those that provide business services; restaurants and bars; retail; health, beauty and fitness; automotive repair, travel and lodging; and recreation, said Patricia J. Lane, section board member and organizer of the project. Lane is a partner with Foley & Lardner in Milwaukee.

MILWAUKEE Cristina Tilley, associate professor of law at the University of Iowa, will discuss the Supreme Court and the media as the featured guest during an upcoming virtual “On the Issues with The video will be available at 12:15 p.m. on the Marquette University Law School website.  The study examines two high-profile U.S. Supreme Court cases heard 50 years apart and suggests that print media’s coverage of the court has changed during that period, with a shift toward less emphasis on legal issues and a greater emphasis on the justices’ perceived political predilections. Tilley focuses her scholarly work on the boundary between public and private law, with particular focus on the appropriate treatment of speech and speech injuries. Prior to her law career, she was a news reporter, specializing in business and legal affairs.

People s Map Commission Learning from Other States, Hears 7th Congressional District Concerns

1:40 This year, Wisconsin along with all the other states will re-draw voting district lines to redistribute political power. With Wisconsin’s current mapping system, whichever party controls the legislatures draws the maps, usually to favor their own party. This is what’s referred to as gerrymandering. Governor Evers created the People’s Map Commission to help draw district lines that don’t favor one political party over the other. To figure out the best, most fair way to redraw lines, the commission is learning from other states. Michael Li with the Brenan Center’s Democracy Program spoke at last week’s commission meeting. He says Iowa is often used as an example of how it should be done.
