MARQUETTE The Marquette City Commission appointed three individuals and reappointed five more to various boards and committees at its meeting on Feb. 8.
Ellen Weingarten, Alex Tiseo and James Susorney were all reappointed to the city’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for a three-year term expiring on Jan. 29, 2024.
Aaron Andres and Michael Larson were also reappointed to the city Planning Commission for terms expiring Feb. 15, 2024.
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board advises the City Commission on operations of the city’s parks system, Lakeview Arena and other recreation programs, according to the city website.
The Planning Commission helps develop and adopt a Master Plan for the city among other items, such as reviewing development proposals and providing zoning recommendations.

MARQUETTE A social media challenge is encouraging Marquette residents to shop local.
The Downtown Dining Challenge, first launched by the Marquette Downtown Development Authority, is challenging people to support local bars and restaurants.
According to the Marquette City Mayor, helping each other during a time of need is nothing new to the area.
“We really come together when we need to,” said Mayor Jenna Smith. “This is a time when we really do need the community to step up and help each other out. It’s something that’s easy to do, it’s obviously delicious. We’ve got a lot of great restaurants downtown that have a variety of food. It’s certainly something that folks are willing to step up and support, and I would encourage folks to do so.”

MARQUETTE The Marquette Downtown Development Authority on Wednesday announced the cancellation of the annual New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in downtown Marquette.
The event traditionally takes place on the 100 block of West Washington Street from 11:30 p.m. Dec. 31 through 12:30 a.m. Jan. 1. The cancellation is due to COVID-19 safety concerns surrounding large-group gatherings.
“Safety is always at the forefront of our minds with downtown events, and the current conditions just don’t lend themselves to a safe environment for those who might attend,” said Tara Laase-McKinney, MDDA promotions and events coordinator, in a statement. “We’re looking forward to better times when we will be able to hold this event in the future.”
