Of all the crushing losses that Seton Hall has endured this season, this one may have to take the cake.
Sure, they blew a 16-point second-half lead to Creighton in January, but somehow blowing an 18-0 lead to start the game against St. John’s in what turned into an 81-71 defeat at Carnesecca Arena seems worse.
A win would have put the Pirates back on the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble, according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, while he called their fourth straight loss “debilitating” for their Big Dance dreams. The Pirates went 1-5 this season in league play against the conference’s top three teams Villanova, Creighton and UConn.

Seton Hall’s loss to St. John’s on Saturday night was the final kick in the teeth for a team floundering into the post-season. Back-to-back losses to Butler and Georgetown were followed by back-to-back losses to the University of Connecticut on Senior Night and the Redstorm in games that could have pushed the Pirates to as high as third in the Big East standings.
STORRS, Conn. (AP) St. John’s came into Connecticut looking for a confidence-building, perhaps season-defining win and got it.
Posh Alexander scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures and the Red Storm came from behind to upset No. 23 UConn 74-70 on Monday in the first meeting of the rivals since February 2013.
Marcellus Earlington scored 15 points and Julian Champagnie, the Big East’s leading scorer, had 10 of his 12 points in the second half. Rasheem Dunn scored 11 points and Dylan Addae-Wusu chipped in with 10 for the Red Storm (8-7, 3-6) who won for just the second time in five games.
WACO, Texas (AP) Jared Butler had a season-high 30 points and eight assists as No. 2 Baylor remained undefeated with a 77-69 victory Monday night over No. 9 Kansas, which has lost consecutive.
