At the moment the Florida Legislature is in the midst of its 2021 session. Or as we like to refer to it in Florida â 60 days of unbridled stupid.
So it should come as no surprise one issue on the agenda of addled bloviating to be pondered by the willing shills of the Capitolâs lobbying corps is a proposal by Lake County Republican Rep. Anthony Sabatini to rename the 481-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 27, which runs from Miami to Tallahassee, the âPresident Donald J. Trump Highway.â
Legislation inspired by the arrest of an Orlando 6 year-old in 2019 that would prohibit arrests of children under 7 for non-forcible felonies passed through a House panel Thursday, a sign the bill could make it into law this year.
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS Anthony Sabatini is running for Congress.
Sabatini, a member of the Florida House of Representatives, made the announcement Monday to a crowd of about 350 supporters at his parents restaurant, J.B. Boondock s. Florida is the freest state in the nation and we work hard to make it that way and keep it that way, he said. But now we need to take some of that fight to Congress, to Washington, D.C. We have never, ever in American history face a moment like this. Everything the Founding Fathers believe in is on the line right now in politics.
In the crowd were familiar faces in local politics: County Commissioners Josh Blake and Leslie Campione, Property Appraiser Carey Baker, Eustis Mayor Michael Holland and Ralph Smith, a Tavares commissioner and the Lake County Republican Party s chairman. Also in attendance: Sabatini s wife, Francheska, the county party s state committeewoman.

Which one? He wouldn t say, but teased an upcoming announcement.
Meanwhile, Sabatini, R-Howey-in-the-Hills, is preparing for the 60-day 2021 legislative session, which starts on Tuesday.
Here s what he told us:
He isn t asking for any money for local projects
The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to put Florida in a tough place, financially speaking. To offset that, Sabatini, as well as Rep. Spencer Roach, R-North Fort Myers, have skipped filing any local appropriations bills.
