Pop-up food park opens for families in South Dallas

Empty lot transformed into space for families in South Dallas
For the next month, the MLK Food Park will be open for families in South Dallas with food, vendors, musicians and entertainers. Kristin Leiber with the Better Block Foundation explains.
DALLAS - A new food park is open in an often forgotten South Dallas neighborhood.
For the next month, an empty lot on Martin Luther King Boulevard at Holmes Street will be transformed into a space for families with food, vendors, musicians and entertainers.
During this time, visitors can give input on the future of mobile food options in the city.
It was a hallelujah moment when we figured out that these thoughts and ideas that we ve been talking about for seven, 10, 12 years are now coming about, said Donald Wesson with Cornerstone Community Development Corporation. It s sorely needed. It s a forgotten neighborhood in South Dallas that s lacking the infrastructure of building a community. We don t have the coffee shops or the parks, but have a lot of liquor stores.
Wesson was among those at the lot on a sunny Monday morning helping to transform it into a vibrant space where vendors will sell food and families will gather. It s kinda the kick-off of the visible transformation that is starting to happen in the Forest district. And for many of the residents here, it s the first time they re going to see some of those tangible changes coming to life, said Kristen Leiber, The Better Block s senior project manager.

As Congress debates the passage of a sweeping reform bill targeting voting rights, campaign finance, redistricting and ethics, Democrats in the House and Senate have the name of a colleague who is no longer with them on their lips.
Rep. John Lewis, who died last year, dedicated his life to expanding and protecting the right to vote. He was attacked for it. And he was elected, in part, to help preserve it. He ultimately helped write part of the bill that Democrats are now pushing to enact.
