MVC provides climate resilience update
The Martha’s Vineyard Commission (MVC) climate resilience committee (CRC) provided an update to the community about its current initiatives during a Zoom presentation hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. The meeting was led by CRC chair and climate change coordinator Liz Durkee.
According to the meeting minutes, Durkee said ACE MV is focusing on providing the new skills and technical acumen needed for blue economy jobs and green-collar employment that the Island is hoping to further develop.
In assessing new job skills, Durkee said, it’s important to allow existing jobs to evolve through the adoption of new practices and expertise, as opposed to a change in title and description.

In its first meeting of 2021, the Martha’s Vineyard Commission approved several changes to designs for the west entrance of the Edgartown Stop & Shop, and reopened a public hearing for the Hob Knob Inn Thursday night.
Chilmark selectmen put the brakes on a preliminary plan to build a shared-use bike path on North Road, amid a sea of criticism from town residents Tuesday.
The outpouring of disapproval came at the selectmen’s meeting, after a letter recently went out to frontage property owners on the rural road sketching the preliminary concept for the path. Drafted by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission and brought before the West Tisbury and Chilmark planning boards in September, the preliminary plan calls for creating a shared walking and cycling path along the six-mile bucolic road that runs from State Road on the West Tisbury end to Menemsha.

Push for artificial field raises questions

This letter was also sent to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, Oak Bluffs planning board, and Oak Bluffs selectmen.
I am writing regarding the proposed athletic project at MVRHS. As some of you may know, I’ve been following this project for a few years. I became involved due to concerns about potential chemical exposure for our athletes. As time has marched on, more and more unanswered questions, combined with apparent willingness to accept insufficient data, ring more and more alarm bells.
We now know more about the impact of plastics and chemicals on our water both our aquifer and our ponds. The water we drink and shower in. The ponds that supply shellfish that many consume. The chemicals that will be absorbed into the skin of our young people as they use the artificial field. The chemicals will bake under the sun, emitting toxic effects into the air we breathe. The chem

Chilmark selectmen voted down a shared-use path on North Road Tuesday night. Though only a rough concept, the idea put forth by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission was seen as detrimental to the bucolic nature of the road. All three selectmen joined various North Road residents in expressing skepticism about the appropriateness of such a project, and ultimately took a unanimous vote to oppose it.
