As the one-year anniversary of the Island’s first real impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic approaches, we reflect on what’s been a most difficult year. In this issue, we feature some of your stories in a special section, “Voices from the Pandemic,” which looks at the various ways we’ve all been affected working and learning from home; feeling unwelcome in your second home; and one heart-thumping battle with this insidious and potentially deadly disease that turned out OK.
We have been mostly supportive of Gov. Charlie Baker and how he has handled these difficult times shutting down schools last spring, and putting restrictions on restaurants and other businesses, setting limits on public gatherings, and limiting out-of-state travel.

‘They are our neighbors’: Homeless shelter sees ‘phenomenal successâ
With homelessness still prevalent on-Island, Harbor Homes provides support, and plans for the future.

Homelessness continues to be a major issue on-Island, with financial struggles of COVID, and winter weather exacerbating the danger for folks who do not have adequate and consistent living situations.
In January, Harbor Homes took the helm of homelessness prevention and remediation on Marthaâs Vineyard, with support from the county, Marthaâs Vineyard Hospital, Marthaâs Vineyard Bank, two family foundations, Bad Martha Farmerâs Brewery, Marthaâs Vineyard Community Services, and others.

Convicted swindler tries again in Tisbury
Jeffrey Windle charged with passing a bogus $2 million check.

Tisbury Police have charged a convicted embezzler with larceny over $1,200 and larceny by check for $1,200, both felonies, for placing a deposit on a $15 million Edgartown property with a $2 million check that was drawn on an account with insufficient funds. Jeffrey S. Windle allegedly signed a purchase and sale agreement at Geoghan Coogan’s law office in Tisbury on Jan. 18, and provided a personal check for $2 million to that law office on Jan. 22 that was dated Jan. 23, according to a police report. Windle allegedly attempted to delay the deposit of the personal check by promising a cashier’s check, a report states, but that never came. He later allegedly provided excuses that his father had died to both the law office and the sellers. At some point in dealing with Coogan, he allegedly also employed the name Jeffrey
