Otto Lijzenga and his wife Kana Hirose were cycling through Spooners Range on Christmas Eve when a hanging branch in the middle of the track divided their paths forever.

Two teenagers, including one seriously injured, were flown to Nelson Hospital after a single-car crash near Murchison. It was one of three single-vehicle crashes that kept emergency services across the Tasman District busy in the early hours of Saturday. Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter pilot Euan Stratford said it was called out to a crash at Longford on the Kawatiri-Murchison Highway, SH6 around 6am. An 18-year-old male was flown to Nelson Hospital in a serious condition along with a 17-year-old who had minor injuries. There were no other vehicles involved.
