Accidental fire kills three pets, badly damages southeast Topeka home

An accidental fire late Tuesday morning killed two cats and a dog while significantly damaging a single-story house in southeast Topeka. No people were hurt, as the two occupants who were present got out before firefighters arrived, said Topeka Fire Marshal Todd Harrison. Another dog was taken to an animal hospital from the scene after Topeka firefighters responded shortly after 11 a.m. to the blaze at 3517 S.E. Girard, Harrison said. Five adults were displaced by the fire, he said. Preliminary investigation indicates the blaze was caused accidentally by unattended cooking, Harrison said.
