PBA seeks IATF approval on team scrimmages

Published April 30, 2021, 3:24 PM The PBA is seeking the request of the Inter-Agency Task Force for 5-on-5 scrimmages to be allowed in areas with regulations below Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine. PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said the league will be asked to explain its case before IATF officials once a formal letter has been sent. Five-on-five scrimmages are only permitted under Modified General Community Quarantine while practices can be held in GCQ areas provided that teams are split into groups. “Titignan natin kung ano ang tugon sa atin ng Task Force at papatawag nila kami para i-justify namin kung bakit,” Marcial said in Thursday’s virtual press briefing.

PBA optimistic on two-conference format despite delays

Published April 22, 2021, 3:52 PM PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said the league remains on track to stage a two-conference format for the 46th season despite delays to its start due to the COVID-19 situation in the country. Marcial said he is not losing hope that the season can begin late next month or in early June even if Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal and Bulacan are currently under Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine. “As of now, ganun pa rin ang format (As of now, we’ll stick with the same format),” said Marcial. The PBA was supposed to start last April 18 with a 10-month season beginning with the centerpiece Philippine Cup and the Governors’ Cup which could see the return of imports.

PBA to implement 20% salary cut on teams, employees

Published April 20, 2021, 5:41 PM The PBA will implement a 20-percent salary cut on teams and employees as part of measures to deal with the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said Tuesday, April 20 that league employees, players and coaches are going to be affected by the salary cut which he recommended during a meeting with the Board of Governors the other day. Utilities who work for the team will be exempted from the deductions, Marcial added. Marcial had discussions with affected parties prior to the press conference, saying it’s a way to repay the teams which paid them in full since the start of the pandemic.
