Technical Conference to Discuss Climate Change, Extreme Weather, & Electric System Reliability

I. Issue Summary On March 16, 2021, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (Commission or FERC) issued a notice regarding a technical conference inviting comments on matters related to electric reliability threats posed by climate change and extreme weather events.[1] [1] The conference will be held from June 1 to June 2, 2021 with pre-conference comments due by April 15, 2021. II. Summary of R Street Position Climate change adaptation is a societal risk management exercise. Independently, electric reliability policy has evolved toward a risk management framework. As such, it is important to accurately fuse characteristics of climate risk into the evolving risk-based electric reliability framework. Overlaying climate risk onto the preexisting and potential future configurations of reliability risk frameworks helps inform policy makers in revising current policies, protocols, and inputs in a manner that maximizes net benefits to society.

South Carolina Still Grappling with Historic Flooding from Florence, a Storm Worsened by Climate Change

DeSmog Oct 1, 2018 @ 15:39 South Carolina was spared the worst of Hurricane Florence’s fury when the storm made landfall in North Carolina on September 14, but did not escape its catastrophic impacts. Nearly two weeks later, the state was still contending with historic flooding.  Flooded house in Socastee, South Carolina. Florence lingered over the Carolinas, dumping more than 30 inches of rain in some areas. Five rivers and the IntraCoastal Waterway crested several feet above major flood stage, resulting in flooding that will last for weeks to come in parts of South Carolina. Cities and towns on its northern coast are experiencing the worst of it, where standing water remains in buildings along the Intracoastal Waterway and near riverbanks deep into the Carolinas.

Global warming spells end of dry and sunny forecasts for southern Africa

Weather Anchor / Meteorologist My early days as a weather reporter in South Africa were marked by long periods of mundane sunny and dry forecasts. I could only watch with envy the storm chasers in America dashing after hurricanes with a mic in hand and an excited camera operator behind. I longed for the drama of the weather events I had studied at university. Since there were no major storms in my student days, I would stare at old satellite images of ones that had hit South Africa in the past. One such picture was of Tropical Cyclone Domoina, which struck the east coast in January, 1984. Domoina brought devastating rains to South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique. It took 16 years for anything like that to hit the region again.
