Syracuse, N.Y. The Syracuse Police Department will reactivate its ShotSpotter technology next week, about eight months after it was canceled due to budget cuts.
The restoration of the program, which tracks and locates gunfire in the city, comes after Common Councilor Michael Greene began publicly calling on Mayor Ben Walsh to restore the service immediately. Greene is running to challenge Walsh in this year’s mayoral race.
Deputy Police Chief Joseph Cecile said the department began reactivating the program earlier this week, and credited Walsh for asking the department to explore expanding it.
