December 29, 2020 On Monday in the District of Columbia District Court, 46 Medicare-participating hospitals filed a complaint against Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex M. Azar, arguing that he should reverse a final decision that bad debts incurred by the hospitals between fiscal years 2006 and 2009, totaling approximately $1,359,216, cannot be reimbursed because the amount was pending at an outside collection agency.
According to the complaint, when Medicare beneficiaries fail to pay their deductible or coinsurance, “(t)o assure that such covered service costs are not borne by others, the costs attributable to the deductible and coinsurance amounts that remain unpaid are reimbursed by Medicare as ‘bad debts.’” To qualify for reimbursement, a provider has to show that the bad debt is from “covered services and derived from deductible and coinsurance amounts” and that it was “actually uncollectible when claimed as wort

On Monday Google filed an answer to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and several states’ October antitrust suit against the tech giant in the District of Columbia District Court for antitrust violations, allegedly arising from its illegally maintained monopolies in the general search services, search advertising, and general search text advertising markets. The plaintiffs sought to restrain Google and to remedy the effects of its purported conduct.
According to the filing, Google generally denied the allegations in the complaint. Nevertheless, Google admitted items such as its history; parent company Alphabet Inc.’s capitalization and revenue for 2019; that it has entered into agreements with various mobile device manufacturers, carriers, and browser developers to promote its products and services; that it runs advertisements on consumer search queries; that it utilizes and advertisement auction system; and other facts of a similar nature.

(Bloomberg) President Donald Trump issued a slew of pardons on Tuesday, including for two people convicted as part of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe and for two former Republican congressmen convicted of a range of financial crimes.
From the Mueller investigation, Trump pardoned former campaign aide George Papadopoulos, who was convicted of lying to the FBI, and Alex van der Zwaan, a lawyer who was also convicted of making false statements during the Russia probe. He also pardoned four men who worked as security guards for Blackwater and had been convicted in relation to the 2007 killing of Iraqi civilians.
