Laos seeks to improve healthcare with better digital information systems

Healthcare workers in Laos find it difficult to access the information they need without proper digital systems. - AFP VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): Health authorities are being advised to improve information systems to increase opportunities for people to access real health information. The topic was addressed at a digital health convergence meeting co-chaired by the WHO Representative to Laos, Dr Mark Jacobs, and Director General of the Department of Planning and International Cooperation, Ministry of Health, Dr Founkham Rattanavong. Also present were senior ministry officials and invited guests. Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Health Associate Prof. Dr Phouthone Muongpak said “We have seen many benefits from investing in health information systems over the years, especially during the Covid-19 epidemic when we now have access to information from multiple parties to make informed decisions.”

Laos govt launches new civil registration, vital statistics systems

VIENTIANE, March 14 (Vientiane Times/ANN): The government has launched e-civil registration and vital statistics (eCRVS) systems and District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2) to ensure more accurate population registration. The systems will be shared and operated by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Home Affairs, which signed agreements on their use in Vientiane on Wednesday. Representing the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Deputy Director General of the Citizen Management Department, Mr Vandy Chanthalideth, signed the agreement with the Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Health’s Planning and Cooperation Department, Dr Soutthanou Nanthanontry. The signing was witnessed by the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Thongchanh Manixay, and Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Bounfeng Phoummalaisith.

Laos PM praises health officials response to Covid-19

VIENTIANE, Feb 1 (Vientiane Times/ANN): Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith ( pic) praised and thanked health officials, whom he described as “white-shirted warriors”, for their efforts to stem the spread of Covid-19. The premier made the remarks when addressing the Ministry of Health’s annual meeting to review progress in the sector and discuss plans for 2021. He also reiterated the need for medical staff to comply with professional ethics in the course of their work, as part of sector-wide efforts to raise standards. The prime minister’s advice comes at a time when health officials are attempting to improve the country’s healthcare services and fulfil the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals so that Laos can rise above least developed country status in the near future.
