‘Ensure efficient functioning of child protection committees’

Village, block, district, town panchayat and ward-level child protection committees are functioning based on a Government Order. There is a need to pass a separate legislation for efficient functioning of these committees, said V. Ramaraj, member, Tamil Nadu Commission for Protection of Child Rights, here on Friday.
After chairing a meeting with officials from various departments regarding prevention of female infanticide, he said that the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights would work towards introducing legislation for these committees. The meeting was organised in the wake of an arrest made in connection with the murder of a seven-day-old female infant - the third girl child of a couple from K. Parapatti in Usilampatti block.

Officials from the District Child Welfare Committee, the District Child Protection Unit and two special police units rescued 18 minor girls, who were allegedly subjected to sexual abuse, from an unregistered home at Vyasarpadi in Chennai.

Earlier the NGO was working at Ameenpur
Mahima Ministries, an NGO working at Ameenpur with orphan children, has launched an ‘Open shelter home for boys’ in the district headquarters on Tuesday. District Welfare Officer Padmavathi and District Child Welfare Committee chairperson Shivakumari has inaugurated the shelter home at Shanti Nagar. Mahima Ministries founder R.D. Maharaj said that for the past one decade they have been providing shelter to orphan children, street children, beggars and others in their shelter home at Ameenpur and the services will continue.
